Iran deal and brave Democrats

Every poll taken in the last few weeks shows that majority of Americans strongly oppose the nuclear deal between USA plus other five countries (United Kingdom, France, Russia, China and Germany) and Islamic Republic of Iran. Nevertheless, President Barack Obama as well as State Secretary John Kerry and many Democratic leaders are pushing for the quick approval of this dangerous deal with Iran.

While it is known that all Republicans in Congress oppose this nuclear agreement, it is very difficult for any Democrat in Congress to publicly state the opposition to the deal. President framed it as a choice between current deal and a war with Iran. Liberal organizations like and J Street accuse opponents in warmongering.

The New York Times and other left-wing media outlets urge all Democrats to stand with President and not to listen Israel government, critics of the agreement and pro-Israel lobby (like American Israel Public Affairs Committee - AIPAC).

However, some influential Democrats decided to stand for their principles and to proclaim their intention to vote against the deal. Senators Charles Schumer (New York), Bob Menendez (New Jersey), Ben Cardin (Maryland), Congressmen Elliot Engel (Bronx), Steven Israel (Long Island), Congresswomen Carolyn Maloney (Manhattan), Grace Meng (Queens), Nita Lowey (Westchester) and others opposed the agreement.

They pointed that the deal will give Iran about $150 bln. in sanctions relief, greater ability to support terrorist organizations like Islamic Jihad, Hezbollah, HAMAS, and will help Tehran to get conventional weapons within the next five years and ballistic missiles within next eight years.

The Joint Comprehensive Plan Of Action (JCPOA) will not prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear bomb, will legitimize main international sponsor of terrorism and will not lead to regime change in a country with a long history of repression and persecution of its own people. History proves that politics of appeasement just emboldens dictators and religious fanatics.

Many Jewish organizations, thousands of Jewish and non-Jewish voters expressing deep gratitude to brave Democrats who decided to oppose the JCPOA, despite all the political pressure.

Special thanks to Senator Schumer who became the first Democratic Senator in the United States proclaiming his intention to vote against this dangerous agreement. And I would like to express my deep gratitude to sophomore Democratic Congresswoman from Queens Grace Meng who became the first New York Democrat from House of Representatives opposing the nuclear deal with Iran.
