Business and Finance

America needs a strong and vibrant economy that is working for everyone. Instead, our government and political candidates constantly blast all corporations and banks, mutual funds and Wall Street, high income and successful entrepreneurs. Small businesses are not treated much better. They face huge commercial rent increases, excessive taxes and fines, unscrupulous inspectors from city and state agencies, red tape, high utilities bills and water tariffs.

We need to support all job creators, giving them tax incentives and public praise. We should encourage innovation and entrepreneurship, responsible business practices and community involvement - whether we are talking about large bank or Mom-and-Pop florist shop. In this section, you will read stories about businesses, their success and struggle, new strategies and products, problems and services.

Comptroller Scott Stringer Pushes City-Sponsored Retirement Plan

Comptroller Scott Stringer Pushes City-Sponsored Retirement Plan

In New York City, three-fifths of private-sector employees don’t have employer-based retirement plans. At companies with fewer than 10 employees, that figure jumps to nearly 90 percent. In response to this problem, NYC Comptroller Scott Stringer recently released the "NYC Nest Egg Plan" to address what he says could be a burden for future taxpayers, who would be called upon to support a growing population of low-income seniors.

Save Sheepshead Bay Road

Save Sheepshead Bay Road

Sheepshead Bay Rd. was once a beautiful, busy, and thriving area. In the last six years, it became a symbol of empty storefronts, piles of garbage, abandoned street shelter for homeless people, and economic decline. It suffered badly from the devastating effects of economic recession, SuperStorm Sandy, overdevelopment and neglect.

Comptroller's audit: Department Of Finance mistakenly gave away $10 million in property tax abatements to corporations. Corporate-owned condos and other properties such as indoor parking spaces and gardens were granted more than $10 million in improper tax abatements over the past 4 years because the New York City Department of Finance failed to conduct basic document checks, according to an audit released today by New York City Comptroller Scott M. Stringer.

Garbage and ignorance

Garbage and ignorance

Here are some pictures I made at Brighton Beach Avenue. It looked like some business owners decided to ignore every law, rule or regulations and to turn Brighton Beach Avenue into dirty street bazaar or transform it into one big garbage pile of rotten vegetables and fruits.

How to support small business?

How to support small business?

Small business owners deserve our strong support. In too many instances,  they are pushed out because of insanely increased commercial rents. Former Met Food supermarket on Brighton Beach Avenue decided to move after its rent was tripled before Sandy. My neighborhood lost an important asset. And we see similar situations all over the city.
