Bay Democrats. Second Annual Gala Awards Dinner

On December 10, 2015, Bay Democrats club celebrated its Second Annual Gala Awards Dinner at the famous Brighton National Restaurant (273 Brighton Beach Avenue, Brooklyn). Almost 200 guests from all neighborhoods in 45 Assembly District attended the celebration.

45 A.D. includes Brighton Beach, Manhattan Beach, Sheepshead Bay, Homecrest, Midwood, Gravesend and Marlboro. About 120,000 residents live in this great District. Bay Democrats and its leaders Ari Kagan and Margarita Kagan work hard to represent every community in 45 A.D. Club is located at 2508 Coney Island Avenue, 2nd floor, Brooklyn, NY 11235.

In the last two years, District Leaders Ari Kagan, Margarita Kagan (no relation to Ari) and Bay Democrats organized, sponsored or co-hosted Thanksgiving Day celebrations in Brighton Beach and Marlboro Houses, Retirement Security seminar at Sheepshead Bay, Back to School events at Homecrest and Gravesend, distribution of free smoke detectors in Shorefront Y, rallies against Gravesend Garbage Transfer Station... Last year, the club supported several victorious candidates for various political offices: Senator Roxanne Persaud, Assemblywoman Pamela Harris, Supreme Court Judge Noah Dear, Civil Court Judge Lorna McAllister. Bay Democrats proved time and time again that it is a strong, influential and effective political organization in Southern Brooklyn.

At its annual dinner, Bay Democrats honored five outstanding individuals who greatly contributed to the well-being of Southern Brooklyn communities.

Here are the names of club honorees:

Mark is one of the most active, hard working, outspoken and respected Council Members. Treyger was elected by his colleagues to the important position of Co-Chairman of Brooklyn delegation in NYC Council. He is a Chairman of Recovery and Resiliency Committee.

  • Lina Chen, C.E.O., Health Essential Association – COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD

Lina Chen, C.E.O of Health Essential Association, was born in China and has Associate Degree of Health Information Technology from TCI, College of Technology and Associate Degree of Information System and Management from Shengzhen University in China. She is a newly appointed member of Brooklyn Community Board 15.

Before she immigrated to the United States, she experienced an event that influenced her to be involved in medical health. Her father’s death of liver cancer plays a big role in her life because it motivated her to establish an association to help the community. Now she lives in Brooklyn and has three daughters. She enjoys her family life, while contributing her time and efforts to the community.

Lina Chen is the founder of Health Essential Association which is a Not-For-Profit Health Education Association for Asian Americans in the United States. The Health Essential Association founded in 2010 to promote self-knowledge of health prevention and treatment, provide information and detail for immigrants on how to understand and find a perfect health insurance for them, and to strengthen the relationship between medical institution and the community.

Lina has been serving the needs of Asian Americans in the neighborhoods of Sunset Park and Sheepshead Bay in Brooklyn by creating many significant events and conferences in notifying the majority toward the signification of health.

Lina created many successful events and conferences. They are “Annual Lunar New Year Celebration”, “Easter’s Day”, “Mother’s Day”, “International Family Day/Health Fair”, “Autumn Moon Festival”, “Senior Dancing Dress up Party”.

Dr. Rada Sumareva maintains a private practice limited to Periodontics and Implant Dentistry in NYC and Bergen County, NJ. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology.

  • Odessa Kennedy, Esq. – ATTORNEY OF THE YEAR AWARD

Odessa Kennedy grew up in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, where she currently resides with her husband Tom and two and half year old daughter Fara. She graduated from Fort Hamilton High School in 1990, and obtained a Bachelor of Arts with Honors from Brooklyn College in 1994.

In 1997, Mrs. Kennedy obtained a Jurist Doctorate from St. John’s University School of Law, where she served on the McKenna Law Review and worked part-time as a Research Assistant for one of her professors.

Mrs. Kennedy was admitted to the Bar and became a licensed attorney shortly after graduating from St. John’s in 1997.

Upon her admission, she joined the practice of her father, John C. DiGiovanna Esq., who is a renowned New York attorney specializing in all facets of civil litigation, with many years of experience in criminal law. She became a partner in 2003, handling all stages of litigation from client intake until trial in all areas of civil litigation including premise liability, products liability, automobile negligence, labor law, medical malpractice, and civil rights violations. She also represented clients in family and criminal matters.

In 2009, Mrs. Kennedy began working for the law firm of Malapero & Prisco, a reputable firm which specializes in defense in the areas of labor law, insurance coverage, motor vehicle, premises liability, product liability, property damage/subrogation and workers’ compensation.

Mrs. Kennedy served on the Judicial Screening Committee for the Democratic Party from 2007-2008. She is a member of Bay Ridge Lawyers Association where she served as Director, and Chair of the Programs and Membership committees. She is a member of the Brooklyn Bar Association and the New York State Bar Association, Tort Committee. Mrs. Kennedy is also an active member of the Shorefront Democratic Club, Brooklyn Democrats for Change, and the Stars and Stripes Democratic Club.

Oleg Zinkovetsky is one of the founders and Director of the popular Second Home Adult Day Care Centers which help seniors to live happier and healthier lives. As a member of National Adult Day Care Centers Association, Oleg took part in a lobbying tour to Washington, D.C. where he met with Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and Congresswoman Yvette Clarke to promote services for seniors.

Many elected officials and community leaders greeted the audience at the National Restaurant. Senator Roxanne Persaud, Assemblywoman Pamela Harris, Councilmen Chaim Deutsch and Mark Treyger, District Leaders Mark Davidovich, Kevin Carroll, Joseph Bova and Nancy Tong congratulated honorees, praised Bay Democrats and promised to work together to improve a quality of life for Southern Brooklyn communities.

Ari Kagan was joined by his most loyal supporters - his beautiful wife Bella and his charming daugther Victoria. His son Yakov, who campaigned for his father in every election since 2006, also strongly supports Bay Democrats, but was not in New York City on December 10 and was not able to attend this particular event.

The dinner in National Restaurant was a tremendous success, included awarding ceremony, speeches by elected officials, performance by a talented singer Ludmila Fesenko, tasty food and warm, friendly athmosphere.
