Aida Leon. Amethyst Women's Project is saving lives

Aida Leon is Executive Director of the Amethyst Women's Project. She is an absolutely unique and very hard working community leader serving people of Coney Island and Brighton Beach since 1999. Her main focus is to provide various assistance to women with AIDS and STD, drug addiction, former prostitutes and former inmates, homeless and displaced tenants, victims of domestic abuse and sex trafficking.

Her office at Mermaid Avenue miraculously survived during Sandy and immediately became a center of disaster assistance to hundreds of families across Coney Island. Aida, as well as her staff and volunteers, tirelessly worked 20-22 hours a day to distribute hot food and clothes, bottles of water and medicine to needy victims of Sandy.

Aida Leon spent so much energy, health and money helping Hurricane victims that she became really sick herself a few months after Sandy. She is still recovering while her charitable organization continues to provide invaluable services for all communities, including Russian speaking women and Chinese Americans.

Our society is blessed to have such dedicated people whose generosity make our lives significantly better. I am proud to call Aida my friend.
